THE ENVELOPE

Many drawing books point out that any pose can be contained within a simplified imaginary shape or “envelope.” It should be noted that being abstract and imaginary, the actual form of the body need not precisely conform to this enveloping form, but can pass outside or within it. The envelope is a useful convenience for artists.

If an artist accustoms himself to creating an overall shape for each pose, it conveys a great deal of information. There is no one envelope shape for a given pose, but whichever one suggests itself to the artist is appropriate. It situates the axis of the whole pose relative to the line of sight. It establishes the overall proportions or ratio of height to length to depth of the pose. If done well, it will also implicitly contain the particular proportions of the individual model. It also conveys some sense of the action or gesture of the pose. Besides, it is a very quick and effective way of placing the whole pose within the boundaries of the page. If the artist does not begin with an overall shape, the drawing often runs off the page or is found not to be composed as intended.
